MicroNanoconference 09

MicroNanoconference '09

The MicroNanoconference 2009, held on November 5th and 6th, was attended by more than 500 microtechnologists and nanotechnologists from academia and industry. This annual conference, an event jointly organised by Nanoned, MicroNed and MinacNed, took place in the Auditorium of TU Delft. The complete field of Dutch micro and nano activities was covered by combining the two extensive research programmes NanoNed and MicroNed with the trade organisation MinacNed.
An intensive and absorbing 2-day programme was scheduled with (inter)nationally renowned keynote speakers from industry (ASML, Boehringer Ingelheim, Cientifica), academia (University of Cambridge, Caltech, University of Twente) and politics (European Commission and National Research Council Canada).

Almost 95 presentations were given in several parallel sessions, discussing a variety of subjects on Microsystems and Nanotechnology. Topics included fluidics, electronic materials and devices, instrumentation, diagnostics and sensing, fabrication and patterning. In addition to the more research-oriented parallel sessions, focused sessions about valorisation in NanoLab NL and the Future of Nanotechnology: Technology Assessment, were also organised and well-attended.
State-of-the art research was also presented on more than 100 posters, and after careful examination by the poster jury the top-3 were awarded prizes. Besides the scientific programme, more than 32 companies were present at the exhibition market.

On Thursday night some 150 participants enjoyed the informal conference dinner in the Frans van Hasselt room of the Auditorium before joining the evening lecture of dr. Barry Goldstein from JPL and NASA. In his fascinating lecture dr. Goldstein presented some spectacular images of Mars made by the Phoenix project.
Albert van den Berg (MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente), one of the 2009 Spinoza prize winners, closed the conference with a fascinating presentation about the use of micro and nanofluidics for biomedical innovations.
Finally, the conference was followed up by an Awards Ceremony. The poster winners were awarded their prizes and the NanoNed Innovation Award 2009 was presented to dr. Siebe van Mensfoort. This year’s success will be continued….. The MicroNanoconference 2010 will again be jointly organised by NanoNed, Microned and MinacNed and will be held in Enschede in November 2010.
